ABOUT GILBERT CANTU
I'm an artist and graphic designer who's been producing art my entire life. I earned my degree in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of Houston in 1999. Since graduating, I've contributed to numerous non-profit organizations including The Coastal Bend AIDS Fountation, Bayfest, The American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, The Ark - Assessment Center & Emergency Shelter for Youth, Corpus Christi Montessori School and the Corpus Christi Bonsai Society. Today, my passion for art is expressed through graphic design, bonsai, music and especially my mixed media paintings.

Mixed Media Work
When I first begin a painting, I start with one seemingly simple image, shape, subject or specific color. From there, I'm off on an adventure into the unknown arranging materials from clothing, digitally enhanced images, pages from 100 year old books, magazine clippings, and giving them new meanings from their previously unrelated subjects. My medium consists of acrylics, india ink, pencil, pastels, plus whatever else I find to compliment and increase the visual idea of my work at that very moment.

My art is a hybrid between my emotional state of being, fragments of my memory and faith, dreams and desires, and the total unleashing of my imagination. As my work becomes more complex, it also becomes more intense, dark, dramatic, playful and unsuspecting.
